Year 7 Girls - 'Journey' Applications Due Wed 22nd

Kia ora Year 7 girls. Below is information from Kim and Megan, so that your parents now a little more about what exactly it is you're applying for. A reminder that your applications are due in to me tomorrow. I'll pass them on to Megan and Kim. The two successful applicants, as well as their caregivers, will be given more information once they have been selected. Exciting stuff!

Journeys
Empowering girls through adventure in the outdoors

What we do:
Connect with Alexandra and Clyde girls aged 11-13.
Bring them together in a safe, supportive female only environment with girls from other schools and positive female role models.
Adventure together in local natural places, negotiate unfamiliar challenges and be physically active.
Facilitate leadership by reconnecting with older girls in our community.

Objectives:
Resilience. Develop and strengthen techniques to use in the face of fear and uncertainty.
Self Confidence. Focus on body power, strength and ability rather than image. Have personal success in the face of self doubt. Enable participants to be who they feel they are and to grow without judgement.
Working together. Facilitate a supportive environment where girls can be their best. Provide opportunities for leadership, and nurture growth individually and as a group.
Hard Skills. Develop skills in a range of outdoor pursuits.
Sustain and Connect. Connect with existing community organisations in their preferred pursuit.

How:

Journeys will invite 8 girls to come on weekly 1-2 hour adventures, either between 3-5pm or in school time. Each term will have a different focus, with a combination of skill progression and exploring new places. Each term will lead to a bigger and more challenging mission in the final week.

Term 4 2018 - Mountain biking - progressing difficulty on a range of local tracks.
Term 1 2019 - On foot adventures - working towards a rogaine
Term 2 2019 - Optional introduction to kayaking. The girls can choose to sign up to the local
introductory kayak programme which is held at the Molyneux Aquatic Centre. Megan or Kim will be there each week instructing, so the girls can feel confident heading along to try this.

Who are we?

Megan Longman
I am a local physiotherapist and mother of two young children, and have been exploring in the outdoors since childhood, having grown up on a high country sheep station. I started slalom kayaking at age 14, and was fortunate to meet a few influential whitewater kayakers with whom I have explored many rivers throughout New Zealand. Over the last 10 years I have developed a passion for mountain biking, and have started a rewarding women’s mountain biking group in Alexandra. I have also competed in rogaines and adventure races including GODzone, and enjoy exploring new places by foot, bike or kayak. I have had a number of memorable challenging experiences in the outdoors which have increased my self confidence and resilience, and would love for all girls to have the opportunity to experience the same.

Kim Froggatt
I grew up adventuring in the outdoors in Alexandra particularly mountain biking and whitewater kayaking. I then studied Physiotherapy at University and continued to be passionately involved in kayaking and mountain bike clubs, and had begun to discover tramping and rock climbing. After working as a physio for a couple of years I changed tack and worked as an instructor at Outward Bound for 4 years. This was a fantastic experience it completely aligned with my values, I loved sharing my passion for the outdoors whilst helping people grow and develop. I’ve recently moved back home with my husband and son and am enjoying being a full-time mother, doing a little bit of work for the Dunstan High School Outdoor Ed programme and being part of an amazing community. I want to help girls in our community be the best they can be and I believe journeying with them in the outdoors is a very effective way to do this.
